The organization was established to support and build on the area’s unique and rich art community, including creative writing and the visual and performing arts.
ArtWorks is especially interested in strengthening arts education in the public schools, nurturing resident artists, and bringing passionate and talented guest artists in all disciplines into our communities.

A cooperative effort with the Rocky Mountain Land Library, the Salida Residency offers artists, writers, and other creative thinkers two-week fellowships in Salida to pursue projects of their own design. The residencies, by invitation only, are intended as "time-out" to write, create art, do research, or engage in creative work not possible in the crush of daily life. Residents also share their knowledge and inspiration with the community by visiting classes at a Salida school and participating in the Arts at the Library program of public talks.
Residents have included:
- Author and futurist David Wann, who gave a standing-room only presentation on building livable, sustainable communities.
- Nationally known landscape photographer Mary Peck, who devoted two days, including hours of one-on-one darkroom time, to work with Buena Vista High School photography students.
- Author and photographer John Weller, who fascinated fourth-grade classes at Longfellow Grade School with his spectacular shots and extraordinary experiences in the backcountry at Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve.
- Best-selling poet David Lee, short-listed for the post of National Poet Laureate, who inspired Salida High School writing classes.
- Author Gary Ferguson, whose talk on wolves generated a stack of fan mail from Salida Middle School students.
- Poet and editor-in-chief of Beadwork magazine Marlene Blessing, whose talk on making living from your art inspired and informed an audience of area writers and artists.
- Award-winning muralist and enamel worker Pat Musick, who spent two days teaching Salida High School art classes how to do enamel work - which resulted the discovery of in a kiln and enameling supplies in a high school storage closet!
SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARKTheatreworks, University of Colorado-Colorado Springs’ award winning touring Shakespeare company performs a three night Shakespeare festival each summer, featuring free performances, audience interaction and workshops for kids. (Initiated by ArtWorks and now coordinated by Salida’s resident theater company, Stage Left)CARL BERNSTEIN, classical guitar concert, in conjunction with the Central Colorado Humanists and the Salida Classical Guitar Society. COLORADO ART RANCH’S very first and highly acclaimed weekend Artposium, "A River Runs Through Us," included a range of speakers from Christo and Jeanne Claude to Salida’s own self-proclaimed "curmudgeon with a soft heart" commentator Ed Quillen, and helped Art Ranch’s inaugural group of artist and writer residents bring their work to Salida for a month-long sojourn. Many of the five artists and writers left with permanent ties to the local community that may result in the donation of a public art project to the City of Salida.
